The Time Traveling Desert Tiger by DeSynchronizer The Time Traveling Desert Tiger by DeSynchronizer
A collab between me and :iconobershutzewienman:
HERE YOU SEE... a TIME Traverling King tiger

Time traveling?

How good could a KT be using todays high standard composite armor, never-fail gearboxes, laser aiming technology, sabot munnitions and a 1500 hp engine?

Pretty damn good, thats what.

(fictionally place this 30 years later, the soviet war in afghan perhaps? How about just a fucking desert.. I like that idea)

Secondly, Don't take up your techinical bullshit with me I don't know anything gun related, even though i'm slated to be an m1 crewman in july.....(this makes me sad) , I didn't draw the Kingtiger, Boris did go bitch on his profile

I drew all the everything else, and he drew the time traveling king tiger (porsche turret)
took around 6 hours for all the coloring/t-72. A new record.
original sketch [link]

The signatures corralate to our world of tanks ID, i'm submitting this tot he fan art spotlight.. wish us luck
And we made it into the fan art spotlight, hooray :D

Actually, based on the thickness of armor of a T-72, and the penetration of the King Tigers high velocity 88, it might have stood a chance, especially since by now it likely would have been retrofitted with a 10.5 cm gun...

Don't forget the transmission, that was the real weak point of the King Tigers (and Panthers).  The armor was too heavy and the engine did not have enough power, in between was the transmission.  Besides 1500hp would not be enough to matter.  Go with a 2,000-2,400hp air cooled radial, like an R2800.  Plenty of power and much more fuel efficient than a turbine.  If you are going to up grade the engine and armor the tranny has to follow.  Good luck in the dessert with that bogie set up, they over heated even in the winter.  Better yet how did they get it on or off a ship?

Don't want to hear anything about getting technical, after all you were the one making the difference about turrets and that is getting technical.

After that pretty cool!  What would have happened if Rommel had these and the gas to run them?

Why does being an M-1 crewman make you sad?  It is the best tank in the world, bar none.

They're good but not the best. That is where the British Challenger steps in. Amazing reliability, Unrivalled track record (not one was killed during the Gulf war) and is used by more armies than the M1 (India being the main customers, buying them and then changing them into the Khalid Shir, I believe) But, between them both, the Abrams and the Challenger are both very good in their own ways.

Hm, I guess you do have a point~ in either case, this was the result of :iconobershutzewienmans: thinking, we did think about all the possibilities when he drew it.

At the time, I was sad because I only had a month after graduating Highschool before going off to boot, now that i'm in, its really fun, but likewise it has its ups and downs. Also I disagree, Abrams is not the best tank in the world, I cannot speak for others, but this PoS breaks down more than anything else I can think of, and half the time they're electronic faults that cost 30 grand to fix.

What we really need to see is a time-traveling Desert Fox. God only knows what would happen if you matched that with modern MBTs and jet aircraft.

88mm packs no punch, the electronics package would probably be to big to fit in, ammunition stowage dangers are still present, and it has a high silhouette, as well as a useless extra crew member.

Just cram a 105mm L1 gun into the turret and all will be fine. You show the KT with ERA here after all.

Syria used surplus Panzer IVs and StuGs until the Six-Day War where the Isrealies captured some and put them in their reserves (major irony)

I've always enjoyed playing "What If?" with history and this one is a great idea.  I think with the upgrades you've listed a King Tiger would be a viable weapon platform today.

Congrats to you both on the work. :)

Well first and foremost thank you, and I'm glad to see that some one has an imagination compared to the man a couple months earlier who argued with me about the reality of the machine. King tiger ftw

Well, your drawing is pretty good, I like yer style, but idea...
First: T-72 has 510 mm combined armor plate in frontal projection (305/450mm for piercing shells/cumulative shells) and 200 mm armor in side projection. And this only WITHOUT dynamic protection.
Piercing shell shooted from PaK-43 (KwK-43 L/72) can penetrate ONLY 203 mm/60 degrees or 250 mm/90 degrees armor (from 100m range).
I think it is not necessary to say that Tiger would not put a T-72 no significant damage?
Second: Mass of Tiger II - 69 tons. This is the HEAVIEST tank after the Merkava, who took part in the fighting.
Also, Merkava has 1500 h.p. V12 diesel, but... this is not enough. The old chassis from Centurion just OVERLOADED. And because of this Merkava very poor mobility. Info - 100%.
And think: you decided to install on a machine that weighs 69 tons, the additional protection that gives more 2-3 tons of weight.
If you recall how often the Tigers broke a suspension, and how it was difficult to repair, THIS Tiger not ride so far.
Overall - a really stupid idea. RTFM.

You gotta remember though, that's 69 tons total weight, with engine included. Replace that with a turbine engine and the weight may go up but not by much. Surely you won't be blazing around the battlefield at 50mph like an Abrams, but you certainly wouldn't be slow either. Also likewise read the description, though it is the same in appearance it is not the same in material.

"How good could a KT be using todays high standard composite armor, never-fail gearboxes, laser aiming technology, sabot munnitions and a 1500 hp engine?"    The keyword in this sentence is "High standard composite armor" which would lower the weight considerably while providing above par protection.

The info you provided on the pak was ww2 data. Fictionally as stated, a sabot for an 88 could very well do above and beyond... I say this because I know that shermans with the 76 had a very very early sabot which could penetrate the front plate of a  KT however the petals failed to discard the kinetic penetrator most of the time rendering the sabot useless. Imagine that power (not failing) but with the wonderful 88.

You say it's a stupid idea but over all I believe it is a gloriously brilliant idea, provided that it wasn't straight out of the factory and placed in a modern scenario. It needs those modifications.

He said not to go bitch-mode on technical details.

He said it's got no suspension problems.
He said it fires modern sabot rounds.
He said he uses modern composite armour (which ways a lot less than simple steel plating. Check what an Abrams would weigh if it was made of pure steel, armour-wise, or just any modern tank)

I think it's a great idea, especially since it's not meant to go all realism over. More of a 'what if' scenario. Calm your titties man.

Lets hope it isn't anything like it was in the German army. Our guys that had both qualifications tended to stay driver as we could never tended to have shortages. Its also known as the most boring tanker job. :P

That tank would use the 12.8cm cannon instead of the 8.8cm cannon.

The 12.8cm did something that the Western Allies couldn't do: take out JS1s at long-range.

That and the Germans were the first to use DU rounds (if only playing with it)... so yeah...

A quick one I can think of is a T32 with a modern diesel engine, new turret (maybe something like with the Sabra), 100mm NATO cannon or 120mm, ERA and modern electronics.

Pretty camo.... Now all we need to do now is thicken its armor and change its cannon to maybe... 105 so it can match modern tanks. :D then it would be unstoppable (kinda).
